I love having chickens that lay blue eggs.
Collecting a colorful basket of eggs makes homesteading more fulfilling. There aren’t that many chickens breeds that lay blue eggs, but they’re worth adding to your flock.
Because we prefer to keep chicken breeds for egg laying, it’s a nice benefit that the breeds that lay blue eggs also have decent yearly egg production.
We currently have 4 chickens that lay blue eggs. When I reviewed chicken breeds for eggs, I mentioned how troublesome this breed was. Compared to other hens we’ve kept, they were getting into all sorts of mischief! They were sleeping in the cherry tree next to the coop for most of the summer (we were in a drought, so I think that contributed). They were also the ones attempting to fly over the coop (over 12 feet) and get to the other side.
Chickens that lay blue eggs take much longer to start laying
When we got our baby chicks, we also bought other breeds. Once our hens started laying, we wait for those blue eggs. It took at least a month longer than the others to start laying. In my opinion, the wait is still worth it!
There’s nothing prettier than a basket with blue eggs in it.
Types of Chickens that Lay Blue Eggs
There are three main chickens that lay blue eggs we love to keep. My Family and I all think the Ameraucana chicken, Easter eggers, and Araucana chickens are all great to raise if you want blue eggs.
Ameraucana Chickens that Lay Blue Eggs
The Ameraucana is a bearded chicken breed that always lays blue eggs. They are cold hardy, considered dual-purpose. They come in many colors, such as black, blue, blue wheaten, brown red, buff, silver, wheaten, and white. Ameraucana traits include full tails, muffs, beards, and slate or black legs depending on the variety. They have pea combs and lay blue shelled eggs. They are easy keepers, alert foragers and nice layers of about 250 blue eggs a year. Ameraucana breeders find that these birds do well in our extreme Canadian winters due to their hardiness and pea combs. Egg production: 250 per year Standard APA Weights: Rooster 6.5 lbs, Hen – 5.5 lbs, Cockerel -5.5 lbs, Pullet – 4.5 lbs.
Easter Eggers Lay Blue Eggs
Easter Eggers aren’t technically an official breed, more of a mutt. Great for family-friendly flocks, these chickens are good layers of colorful eggs that can range from olive green to turquoise blue and occasionally rose or brown. Like their eggs, these chicks will grow into adult birds that vary widely in feather colors.
And if amazing feather and egg color wasn’t enough, Easter Eggers are also extremely docile, and heat and cold hardy. Though they are favored for their eggs, they are a dual purpose breed and are large enough to be used for meat. They’re often a mix of bearded and non-bearded.
Many Easter Eggers lay blue eggs, but it’s not a guarantee.
Araucana Chickens Lay Blue Eggs
The Araucana is a rare bird that’s not as common and harder to find. This Chilean origin breed lays beautiful blue medium and large eggs. What makes them so unique is some will hatch with tufts, which add a lot of charm! We also have some that will hatch out rumpless. That’s right, No tail!
